Compilation and analysis of the Key Project Level Indicators (KPIs)

Within the framework of the LIFE URBASO project, this action focuses on the collection and analysis of Key Project Level Indicators (KPIs). These indicators are derived from the data obtained in the implementation actions (Action B2) and actions related to the impact on the quantity and quality of drinking water (Action B3) and the impact on the cost of raw water treatment (Action C1.1), covering not only environmental aspects but also economic and social factors.

In this way, the reduction of pressure on various water bodies will be measured. To achieve this, the number of hectares of monoculture plantations that will be converted into mixed broadleaf forests (with continuous cover) will be taken into account. This transformation is expected to influence soil organic matter, increase local biodiversity, and reduce soil erosion. These are precisely the changes that will be quantified through various KPIs.

All of this will influence the quality of drinking water. Its monitoring will be carried out using the following indicators: suspended sediments and total organic carbon will be tracked, with the expectation of achieving a 10% reduction in both parameters. Additionally, improvements in ecosystem services will be monitored; analyzing trends in these services (through water quantity and quality modeling) and evaluating their condition (through minimum flow analysis).

Considering all these factors, it is expected that the actions carried out within the LIFE URBASO project will directly affect 17,000 inhabitants, and in the future, as the methodology is extrapolated, it could benefit up to 34,000 people.

Throughout the project, collaboration with various public entities will take place, and different events and activities will be organized for professionals in the administration and forestry sectors, landowners, and students from the Urdaibai area. These actions will also serve as project indicators, tracking the number of attendees and participants.

Throughout the duration of the project, periodic reviews of the values achieved in each KPI are being carried out, comparing them with the objectives set for the project’s completion. In case significant deviations are detected, corrective measures will be applied to ensure the achievement of the proposed goals.

Additionally, the indicators have been integrated into the LIFE KPI Webtool. This process enables structured monitoring and facilitates the evaluation of the impact of the actions implemented in LIFE URBASO.
