\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nLIFE URBASO is evaluating close-to-nature forestry practices for the protection of surface water resources for human consumption and biodiversity, aiming to enhance climate resilience and the bioeconomy. By translating the manual into Basque, the project ensures accessibility for forest owners, managers, and educators interested in applying this model in the Basque Autonomous Community (CAPV).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nClose-to-nature forestry maintains a continuous forest cover which plays a critical role in soil protection, as the forest canopy and forest floor minimize soil erosion by reducing direct rainfall impact and stabilizing soil with deep root systems. This approach also improves water quality by limiting sedimentation in surface water abstraction points of water intended for human consumption, which could otherwise compromise drinking water quality. Additionally, forested riparian zones serve as natural filters, capturing pollutants and regulating water flow, contributing to cleaner and more sustainable water systems.
